Our New String ID Search is available HERE. You can enter the colors of the wrapping on your string to determine what make and model it is.

Please look closely at your string selections. Some strings come in three or more thicknesses and are made for many sizes of instruments. If you don't have a gauge (thickness) preference, choose medium.

If you are interested in trying a new type of string and are unsure if you will like them, we suggest putting them on one at a time. This way you can return the uninstalled strings for an exchange or a refund in the event you are not satisfied with the results.

We are adding technical data about strings to many of our pages. If you are interested in the tensions of various strings, look for a chart at the bottom of each string product page.

After you select an instrument, you will be taken to specific information about strings for that instrument. In "Topics Mode", more technical information is available about strings and other topics.

Although the 'right strings' can help your instrument sound its best, they are not the solution to every instrument's weaknesses. Maintaining a well adjusted instrument and bow contributes as much if not more to the performance quality of your instrument as any string will.

Installation and durability of strings-The majority of broken strings are the cause of the instrument. If you have a string that breaks near the nut, or between the peg and the nut, chances are there is an aggravating contact to the string. Constriction of string movement through the nut is most often the cause of a break.

Pirastro recommends that the string is no more than 1/3 of its diameter into the nut. But strings vary in diameter from one type to the next. Therefore, when changing from one string type to another, or after years of string wear in the grooves, the string may be too thick to glide easily through the nut. Friction against the string can cause fraying of the winding of the string near the nut, or breakage in the peg box. There is no warranty against string breakage!

At a minimum, we suggest applying some graphite from a pencil in the grooves of the nut when changing strings. If the grooves appear too deep, or the nut makes the string bend sharply as it crosses toward the peg, have it examined by a qualified repair person.

We will replace at no charge strings that are false in tone immediately after installation, or have broken by no fault of the instrument. Replacement is at our discretion.
