Composite
core string technology is the string making technology of the
future, today. Strings
of this type tends to be among the most expensive. However
D'Addario offers Zyex, and Corelli Alliance are moderately
priced products of this type. Pirastro Obligato and Evah Pirazzi
are best-selling composite core strings. |
While
Thomastik Dominant has dominated violin string sales for years,
the names of new string choices have fallen on deaf ears in
the United States. There
are many other strings on the market today that are good alternatives
to Dominant. Many users of Dominant strings have switched to
Helicore, Obligato, Evah Pirazzi or Vision. |

Violas
come in different sizes, and so do strings. Long
Scale strings are intended for instruments 16 inches or larger.
If a string is described as Full Size, it is generally intended
for 15 inch and larger instruments. Some brands offer Medium
Scale, which is specifically for 15-16 inch Violas. Short Scale
is for 14-15 inch Violas. There are few choices of strings
for small Viola. Helicore is one of the best strings you can
get for a small instrument. Otherwise, string choices are limited
to student grade products. |

Viola
Players often substitute a Steel A with other brand of D, G
and C-Larsen,
Jargar and Kaplan Solutions are common choices. New brands
of strings take this into account, by offering an A as part
of the set, which has this type of construction. For Example,
the Evah Pirazzi string set has a solid steel core A (like
Larsen and Jargar), but the D, G and C strings are of the
composite core type of construction.
