News

Jargar Strings are back in stock. After more than a year of short supply, these popular strings are once again readily available.

Viola players often
substitute a steel A string with whichever D, G, and C string they use. The Jargar, Permanent, Larsen, and Chromcor-Plus A strings are the usual choices. Synthetic or Gut core A strings often lack sufficient brightness and volume. Added durability is also a benefit of Steel.

Alternating the C string can enhance your instruments low register. Try Helicore or Spirocore silver or Spirocore tungsten for a steel string solution. These will provide a quicker response from your bow than the more sluggish Perlon core Dominant. Also consider the Tonica Tungsten C if you don't want to try a steel C.

New String Type. Composite core strings for Violin and Viola are a new trend in production. Corelli Alliance was the first to use this application. Now, D'Addario has introduced their Zyex string for Viola and Pirastro has begun shipment of their Obligato string for Viola. All of these strings provide a playing life two to three times longer than conventional synthetic or gut string types because the core of the string does not lose tension as quickly or as much.

Violas are made in different sizes, and so are Viola strings. D'Addario offers viola strings in scale lengths for all instruments. We offer D'Addario Prelude, Pro Arte, and Helicore strings for smaller than full size instruments. Super sensitive strings are also available is small sizes. Using a full size string on a small Viola will result in loss of volume, tonal quality, and playability. For a violin size instrument (14inches, 35.5cm) strung as a viola, Prelude is made in extra short scale. (Viola size is determined by measuring the length of the back not including the button).
